This simple instrument is of very good quality and simple to use if you know a little about rudimentary surveying and it's principles. I have found that reviews dealing with many different types of instruments for sale to the public, are given less than stellar reviews because they are simply expecting the equipment to do something that requires a small bit of background know how for it's use, that the buyer does not have.
